Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII is told in two worlds; Cocoon, safe, isolated and civilized, and Pulse, dangerous, wild, and diseased. Cocoon was created by supernatural beings, the fal’Cie, where tens of millions of people live out their lives, away from the dangers of the world below. The fal’Cie, or Crystals, reside in Pulse but have designed the advanced society of Cocoon as the ultimate home for humanity. The degree of isolation is so great that anyone that might have come in contact with or has a connection with Pulse is asked to migrate out of Cocoon. It exists as an airborne habitat, permanently separated from Pulse, which is believed to be the entire planet below.
The story follows Lightning, a young woman whose true identity and agenda is unknown. With connections to the Cocoon military, she is searching for the Pulse fal’Cie with her old army acquaintance, Sazh Katzroy. Snow Villiers leads Team Nora, a militant group rebelling against Cocoon’s Holy Government and army, PSICOM. Oerba Dia Vanille is completely cloaked in mystery, with almost nothing known about her except a connection to Pulse. Along with an as-of-yet unnamed young man, these five travel around the world, trying to complete their Focus.
From the glimpses of the game that we’ve had so far, the themes of the game seem to be ranging from fighting against determinism to the characters’ aloneness in their task. Many facts about the history of FFXIII’s world are still unknown; such as exactly why Lightning is known as the enemy of mankind and how she will eventually destroy the world, what part the Crystals have played in the history of the world or even if the fal’Cie created humanity when they made Cocoon.
